There was a time in my life when survival was my default setting. I didn’t wake up excited or calm-I woke up prepared. Prepared to defend, to explain, to endure. And even when life got quieter, my nervous system didn’t. My body stayed on edge, waiting for the next hard thing. But healing taught me something I never expected: softness takes strength. And joy is not a reward for surviving; it’s something you deserve to feel now.
If you’re in a season where gentleness feels out of reach, I hope this helps you take one step closer to it. I’ll share what helped me release fear, rebuild safety in my body, and soften back into the joy I thought I’d lost for good.
What Does Healing Really Mean After Trauma?
We hear the phrase healing journey so often that it can lose meaning. For me, it wasn’t just therapy appointments and long walks in the park. It was unlearning the way I’d trained myself to brace for life.
Healing meant:
- Letting go of the need to prove my worth through pain.
- Releasing the belief that being “tough” was the only way to be respected.
- Creating emotional safety before seeking external peace.
And most of all, it meant softening-even when that felt risky.
The Survival Patterns That Follow Us
It’s common to carry survival habits long after the danger is gone. You might find yourself apologizing for simply having needs, staying constantly busy to avoid facing your emotions, or bracing for rejection even in relationships that feel safe. These aren’t flaws-they’re patterns you learned in the presence of pain. They helped you survive once, but that doesn’t mean they have to stay with you forever. Healing invites us to notice those habits with compassion and gently choose something new.

From Hypervigilance to Wholeness. How I Started to Soften
The shift didn’t happen overnight. It came slowly, through small, sacred acts of self-trust. If you’re wondering where to start, here’s what helped me.
1. Create Moments of Emotional Safety
I began setting aside time each morning, just five minutes to check in with how I actually felt. Not what I should feel. That changed everything. When we create emotional safety for ourselves, we stop outsourcing it to others who may not be capable of holding us.
2. Reconnect With
Your Body
Trauma often pulls us out of our bodies. I used to feel completely disconnected from mine until I started cooking again. Sautéing onions, stirring rice, and tasting fresh herbs, brought me back home to myself. If you need a place to begin, start with one of my recipes that feels nourishing.
3. Set Boundaries
Without Apologizing
Softness doesn’t mean being passive. In fact, learning to say no with love was one of the strongest things I ever did. Your healing journey depends on boundaries that protect your peace, not just your time.
Why Softness Is Not Weakness
Somewhere along the way, many of us were taught that being soft meant being weak. That if we weren’t loud, guarded, or constantly achieving, we were nothing. But I’ve found that true power doesn’t need to shout.
- Softness allows for deeper connection. It opens us up to receive love, help, beauty, and joy. You can’t experience those things if your walls are always up.
- Softness makes room for grace. When you’re gentle with yourself, it becomes easier to offer grace to others too, without sacrificing your own needs.
- Softness brings you back to who you were before the world taught you to armor up. And that version of you? They deserve to be seen.

What If Healing Feels Too Far Away?
It’s okay if you’re not there yet. I wasn’t either. Some days I still need to remind myself that I’m safe, that I’m allowed to feel joy, that I don’t have to explain my softness to anyone.
Here’s what I’d tell you if we were sitting at my kitchen table right now:
- Start where you are.
- Speak your truth in small ways.
- Don’t wait until life calms down to begin healing. Your journey can start in the chaos.
You’re not alone in this. My story, the pain I walked through, and the tools I found along the way are all in Rising Above Adversity: Healing and Nurturing Your Inner Child. If you’ve felt like the world was too much, or that your tenderness wasn’t welcome, my book was written with you in mind.
