A Celebration of Flavor and Creativity
Chocolate cake has always been a crowd favorite . For Halloween, I wanted to take that familiar comfort and give it a spooky twist: a dessert that looks eye-catching but is delicious too. This Halloween Chocolate Cake recipe combines Dominican vanilla and rich cocoa for flavors that melt in your mouth. The smooth white buttercream provides the perfect backdrop for the eerie red ganache and edible fake blood, creating a cake that’s both elegant and delightfully chilling.

How to Make Arelis Calkins’ Chocolate Halloween Cake Recipe
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 340°F. Line two 8-inch cake tins with parchment paper.
- Mix the Batter: In a stand mixer or large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and Dominican vanilla extract until fully combined.
- Bake to Perfection: Divide the batter between the tins and bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a rack.
Buttercream, Ganache, and Edible Blood Recipes
- Buttercream Instructions: Whip the butter, sugar, and vanilla until smooth and fluffy. Separate into two bowls: one for white buttercream, the other for red. You’ll use the white to decorate the outside and red for the filling.
- Ganache Instructions: Melt the white chocolate and cream in short microwave bursts, stirring between each. Once melted and smooth, add confectioners’ sugar and red coloring until you get a deep, rich “blood” hue.
- Edible Fake Blood Instructions: Whisk together jam, water, and red gel food coloring until smooth. This edible fake blood for cake is naturally colored and free of corn syrup: a fun, easy way to make your dessert stand out.
Assembling and Decorating Your Halloween Chocolate Cake
- Layer the Cake: Once the cakes are cooled, slice both cakes in half to create four layers. Spread the red buttercream between each, stacking them neatly.
- Crumb Coat and Chill: Cover the chocolate cake with a thin layer of white buttercream to seal the crumbs. Chill for 30 minutes, then apply a second layer for a smooth, polished look. (Note: Make sure there is more buttercream on the sides of the cake than you need, as some will be removed as you spread it over.)
- Add the Drip and Blood: Drizzle your red ganache around the top and sides using a spoon or piping bag. The more you push it to the edge, the more it will drip. Gently splatter the edible fake blood with a pastry brush for that spooky effect. Set the cake in the fridge again for 30 minutes to set.
- Decorate: Get creative! I’ve used skulls, black roses, and even chocolate shards to complete the look. The goal is to make it hauntingly beautiful while keeping it fun.
