What to Expect in Your First Few Reiki Sessions (And How to Prepare Your Mind and Body)

What to Expect in Your First Few Reiki Sessions (And How to Prepare Your Mind and Body)
Reiki often comes into our lives when we’re searching for something deeper: healing, peace, or simply a reminder that we are more than our stress and struggles. If you’ve been curious about trying Reiki sessions, but you’re unsure what to expect, you’re not alone. Many people hesitate at first, wondering if they’ll feel anything or if they’re “doing it right.” The beauty of Reiki is that there is no wrong way to experience it.

Let me walk you through what typically happens during a Reiki session, how to prepare yourself, and how opening your heart and mind can help you receive the most from this gentle but powerful practice.

What Is Reiki?

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan. The word “Reiki” combines rei (universal) and ki (life energy). Practitioners channel energy through their hands to help restore balance in the body, mind, and spirit. Reiki can help reduce stress, support relaxation, and even ease physical discomfort. Many people describe their first Reiki session experience as deeply calming and restorative.

What Happens During a Reiki Session?

Your first Reiki session might feel unfamiliar, but it’s designed to be safe, supportive, and deeply restorative. Here’s what usually happens at an energy healing session:

Setting the space

You’ll likely be in a quiet, comfortable room with soft lighting and relaxing music. Think of it as a retreat for your soul.

Lying down or relaxing fully clothed

Unlike massage, Reiki does not involve pressure or manipulation. You’ll remain clothed and simply rest.

Light touch or hands above the body

The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above different areas of your body, focusing on energy centers (chakras).

Gentle sensations

Some people feel warmth, tingling, or waves of calm. Others may simply feel deeply relaxed, even falling asleep.
No two Reiki sessions are the same, and your experience may change over time. What matters is allowing yourself to receive the energy that flows through you.

How to Prepare for Your First Reiki Session

Reiki works best when your mind and body are open. Here are a few simple ways to prepare:

  • Set an intention: Before your session, think about what you hope to receive: peace, clarity, healing, or simply rest.
  • Wear comfortable clothing: Loose, cozy clothes allow you to relax fully.
  • Hydrate and eat lightly: A glass of water and a light meal beforehand will help you feel balanced.
  • Arrive with an open heart: Release the need to control or predict the outcome. Reiki meets you exactly where you are.

After the Session: What You Might Notice

The effects of Reiki often continue beyond the session itself. Some people feel lighter, calmer, or more emotionally balanced for days. Others notice improved sleep or a release of long-held tension. It’s also normal to feel reflective, as if old emotions are surfacing to be healed.

A helpful tip: give yourself quiet time after your session. Journal, go for a walk, or sip tea, anything that helps you stay connected to the sense of calm you just experienced.
Why Reiki Supports Whole-Person Healing - Arelis Calkins

Why Reiki Supports Whole-Person Healing

Reiki doesn’t replace medical care, but it can complement it beautifully. By easing stress and supporting relaxation, Reiki creates space for your body’s natural healing abilities to work more effectively. Practices like Reiki are increasingly being used alongside traditional care for stress management and emotional wellness. In a world that often pulls us in every direction, Reiki invites us back to center. It’s a reminder that we carry within us the capacity for healing and balance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Reiki

How long does a Reiki session last?

Most Reiki sessions last between 45 and 60 minutes. The time is flexible depending on your needs, but even a short session can bring a sense of calm and renewal.

Do I need to believe in energy work for Reiki to help?

No belief is required for Reiki to support you. Reiki works gently with your body’s natural energy, and many people experience benefits whether they come in as skeptics or seekers. All that’s needed is an open mind and the willingness to relax.

What should I feel during or after a session?

Everyone’s experience is unique. Some feel warmth, tingling, or waves of relaxation, while others simply feel deeply at peace or even fall asleep. Afterward, many notice improved sleep, lighter moods, or a release of tension. Whatever you feel is valid. There’s no “right” way to experience Reiki.

Is Reiki safe alongside medical treatment?

Yes. Reiki is a complementary practice, not a replacement for medical care. It’s often used alongside traditional treatments to reduce stress, support emotional well-being, and encourage the body’s natural healing processes. Always continue following your doctor’s advice while using Reiki as an added layer of support.

Reiki

Reiki and spirituality have been essential in helping me forgive, heal, and move forward. Our bodies carry trauma, and Reiki helps release it—so you feel better not just physically but mentally and spiritually too. Letting go of what no longer serves us is a gift, and Reiki helps make that possible.

Design

Home is where our stories unfold. It should be a place that brings peace and joy, a reflection of who you are. I believe that surrounding yourself with beauty and comfort can make all the difference. I’ll be sharing my favorite design ideas and tips to help you feel at home, wherever you are.

Cooking

Cooking feeds the soul and brings families together. For me, it’s a way to express love and share who we are with one another. I’ll be sharing some of my favorite recipes here, especially those inspired by my Dominican heritage. Let’s bring a little warmth to the kitchen and create meals that nourish from the inside out.

Life Coaching

As I continue my journey to becoming a life coach, I’m passionate about helping people work through their trauma and come out stronger. Marriage, family, and personal growth are areas I’ve learned so much about through my own experiences, and I’m here to help you find the support and encouragement you need to heal and grow.
