Arelis Calkins’ Must-Have Kitchen Essentials That Will Transform Your Cooking
Cooking, for me, has never just been about feeding my family. It’s about creating moments, telling stories, and passing love from my heart onto a plate. The kitchen is where I find healing, where laughter lingers in the air, and where everyday meals become memories. And just like any craft, the tools and ingredients you choose can make the experience smoother, richer, and more joyful.

If you’ve ever wondered which kitchen essentials I refuse to live without, here’s a peek inside my own space. These are the everyday items that help me cook with ease, add depth to my recipes, and remind me that food is one of life’s greatest love languages.

Fresh Ingredients That Bring Meals to Life

When you cook with fresh ingredients (such as garlic, onions, peppers, cilantro, oregano, and so forth), you don’t need much else to make your experience tasteful, relaxing, and beautiful. I always keep my kitchen stocked with staples that nourish my body and bring comfort to my soul:

Fresh Ingredients That Bring Meals to Life

Garlic

Garlic is the base of almost every dish in my home. These and many other ingredients bring bold flavors and also carry a warmth that feels like a hug in every bite.

Legumes

From beans to lentils, legumes are a must. They’re filling, versatile, and in many of my favorite comfort meals. Keeping legumes stocked and ready to go means I can put together a filling dinner in less than 30 minutes.

Fresh produce

Seasonal vegetables and fruits are non-negotiable. Besides the health benefits that they provide for the ones I love, they bring flavor, color, texture, and balance into my cooking that instantly becomes a dining experience for those at my table.
Please keep in mind that certain cooking essentials (such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and legumes), keep meals simple, yet nourishing, as long as they’re fresh. With the right staples on hand it makes it easier for me to create healthy dishes without overthinking. If you need inspiration for your dinner tonight, try this Dominican classic recipe that’s quick, easy, and fulfilling.

Must-Have Cookware Kitchen Essentials

Having the right tools doesn’t just make cooking easier; it makes it more enjoyable. These are my must-have cooking tools that I use almost every single day:

Non-stick cookware

For quick weeknight meals or leisurely Sunday cooking, my non-stick pans save time and effort while keeping cleanup simple.

Wooden spatulas (lots of them!)

I keep several variations because each has its purpose. Wooden tools are gentle on cookware, but more than that, they help me preserve the products I want to keep in my kitchen.

A 7-inch sharpened Miyabi knife

One of my pride and joys in the kitchen. A reliable, sharp knife makes cooking safer, faster, and more precise. It’s one of those investments that truly transforms the way you cook.
When your tools feel like an extension of your hands, cooking becomes less of a task and more of an art.

Seasoning With Love

Spices and herbs are what make food sing. Beyond garlic, other herbs and fresh produce, I usually keep Himalayan salt, fresh grated pepper, and most spices within reach. A sprinkle of cumin, a dash of smoked paprika, or fresh herbs can elevate the simplest meals into something unforgettable for you and your loved ones. Although it can be challenging, cooking at home is without a question a healthier daily choice.

Home-cooked meals not only saves families money, but also gives us a moment to reconnect with the ones we love. If we take the time to choose the essentials that we need to prepare a meal, it will make it more meaningful and enjoyable to cook more often, making it simpler to create connections around the dining table.

From My Kitchen to Yours

Place mirrors across from windows to reflect sunlight deeper into your space. Your candles, chandeliers, sconces, lamps, and spotlights will reflect the same beauty after the sun has gone down. This simple trick not only makes rooms brighter but also makes them feel more spacious and alive.

If You Have Ever Wondered Why Kitchen Essentials Matter

If You Have Ever Wondered Why Kitchen Essentials Matter

You may not need an endless list of gadgets to cook well. What you might really need are a few trusted tools, fresh ingredients, and a willingness to experiment. My kitchen essentials aren’t fancy; they’re functional, timeless, and chosen with love. They allow me to focus less on stress and more on the joy of preparing meals for the people I love. Think about your own kitchen. Which items do you reach for again and again? Those are your true essentials, the ones that make cooking not just possible, but pleasurable.

A Kitchen That Nourishes Body and Soul

Cooking is one of the most grounding practices I know. I believe that cooking is not about perfection; it’s about presence. With garlic sizzling in the pan and fresh produce on the counter, I’m often reminded that delicious-tasting food has the power to heal, connect, and brighten the most ordinary days. And the truth is, you don’t have to be a professional chef to create magic in your kitchen. All you need are a few essentials, a bit of patience, and a whole lot of love.

Reiki

Reiki and spirituality have been essential in helping me forgive, heal, and move forward. Our bodies carry trauma, and Reiki helps release it—so you feel better not just physically but mentally and spiritually too. Letting go of what no longer serves us is a gift, and Reiki helps make that possible.

Design

Home is where our stories unfold. It should be a place that brings peace and joy, a reflection of who you are. I believe that surrounding yourself with beauty and comfort can make all the difference. I’ll be sharing my favorite design ideas and tips to help you feel at home, wherever you are.

Cooking

Cooking feeds the soul and brings families together. For me, it’s a way to express love and share who we are with one another. I’ll be sharing some of my favorite recipes here, especially those inspired by my Dominican heritage. Let’s bring a little warmth to the kitchen and create meals that nourish from the inside out.

Life Coaching

As I continue my journey to becoming a life coach, I’m passionate about helping people work through their trauma and come out stronger. Marriage, family, and personal growth are areas I’ve learned so much about through my own experiences, and I’m here to help you find the support and encouragement you need to heal and grow.
