Reiki Healing

Find gentle, steady ways back to yourself in the mind, body, and heart with Reiki healing.
Arelis Calkins practicing reiki healing at home in a calm, welcoming space.

a kinder way to come back to yourself

I don’t believe healing needs to be loud or dramatic. For me, it began in small moments: a breath that finally let go, a friend who sat with me through a hard night, a quiet practice that made my shoulders stop doing all the talking. Reiki came into my life the same way: quietly, patiently, and without fanfare. It didn’t fix everything overnight, but it gave me a place to rest when everything felt heavy.

This is my way of sharing what I’ve learned as someone who found calm and a clearer heart through practice and curiosity. I’ll explain what Reiki is, what it tends to do for most people, and simple ways you can try its effects at home. If you’re curious or exhausted or just wondering if there’s a softer way forward, you’re in the right place.

What Is Reiki Healing?

Reiki is a gentle energy practice that helps the body and mind move from tension into rest. The name comes from Japanese roots meaning “universal life energy.” In practice, that looks like soft hand placements (or hands hovering) meant to encourage the body’s natural ability to relax and repair.

People often ask, “What does Reiki do?” While results differ, many report a sense of deep calm, emotional release, clearer thinking, and better sleep. Reiki isn’t a religion or a therapy replacement. It doesn’t promise cures. What it does offer consistently, from the people I’ve known who work with it and from my own experience, is a reliable doorway into calm. What matters most is your willingness to relax and receive.

New to the concept? Start with What Is Reiki? Let’s Take a Look at This Healing Practice for a welcoming, first-timer overview.

How Reiki Works

Think about what happens when you finally exhale after holding your breath: your body softens, your shoulders drop, and clarity returns. Reiki invites that exhale. Through a series of gentle hand positions above the body or with light touch (fully clothed), a Reiki practitioner focuses attention and intention on restoring flow. When you relax, your nervous system shifts from “fight or flight” into “rest and digest,” which is where deep repair becomes possible.

People feel warmth, tingling, waves of release, or simply a quiet stillness. Others fall asleep, and that’s okay. There’s nothing you have to “do right.” Reiki meets you where you are. When our nervous system is constantly pushed toward stress, our bodies hold on to old wounds and habits. Reiki gives the system a chance to reset, even if only a little. That reset is where clarity, rest, and better decisions begin.

Reiki Healing Techniques

Different practitioners have different styles, but these are common Reiki healing techniques that most people will recognize:

  • Hands-on or hands-hovering placements: A sequence over the head, shoulders, torso, knees, and feet to encourage whole-body balance.
  • Chakra balancing (energy centers): Gentle attention to energy centers to help balance emotional and physical tension.
  • Breath & guided imagery: Simple breathing or quiet visual cues to help soften the body’s defenses.
  • Distance Reiki: Reiki can be shared remotely with consent and intention; many people experience similar calm and clarity from home.

The Reiki Benefits I Felt (and What Others Often Report)

Over time, Reiki helped me do small but important things: sleep better, stop bracing through everyday moments, and have a softer way to feel difficult emotions. Here are the benefits people regularly notice:

  • Deep Relaxation & Relief: Less tension in the jaw, shoulders, and belly; easier breathing; better sleep.
  • Emotional Release & Clarity: Space to feel, process, and set down what isn’t yours to carry.
  • Mental Focus: Fewer spirals, more presence; an easier time making decisions from a grounded place.
  • Physical Recovery Support: While Reiki isn’t a medical treatment, many people notice gentler pain perception and a calmer body while healing.
  • Spiritual Connection: A felt sense of peace, purpose, and being lovingly held, however you define that.

When Reiki Is Helpful

Through all of life’s seasons, I’ve seen Reiki be particularly helpful during these times:

Together, we’ll work to:

  • High Stress and Burnout: When you’re always “on,” Reiki helps your nervous system remember how to “turn down.”
  • Life Changes: New parenthood, career shifts, grief, or healing from relationship pain can stir old patterns. Reiki encourages steadiness.
  • Creative Blocks: Resting the mind often frees the heart. Many people notice inspiration returning after a session.
  • Wellness Upkeep: Just like stretching or journaling, Reiki can be part of consistent self-care that prevents overwhelm from piling up.

It’s not a quick trick. It’s a steady practice that supports the work you’re already doing in therapy, medicine, or life changes. If you’re wondering whether you’re ready, you might relate to Reiki Benefits: 5 Signs You’re Ready to Start Your Healing Journey.

What to Expect Before, After, and During Reiki Sessions

While every practitioner has a unique style, most sessions follow a calm, predictable rhythm. You’ll remain fully clothed and rest comfortably on a massage table or chair. The space is quiet and grounding, often with soft music, low lighting, and a cozy blanket if you’d like one. You’ll be invited to breathe, notice, and let go.

Before a Session

  • Hydrate, choose comfortable clothes, eat lightly, and arrive a few minutes early if meeting in person (or set your space if receiving Distance Reiki).
  • Set a simple intention: “I’m open to what serves my highest good.”
  • Silence your phone and give yourself permission to pause.

During a Session

  • There’s nothing to “do” but relax; breathe gently and notice. Physical sensations or emotions may come up; that’s all part of the process.
  • You may feel warmth, tingling, or gentle waves of emotion. You may also feel nothing but calm. Rest is part of the work.
  • If something feels uncomfortable physically or emotionally, speak up. Consent and comfort matter.

After a Session

  • Drink water, move slowly, give yourself a little space, and journal a few notes: What feels lighter? What surprised you? What do you want to remember?
  • Notice the ripple effects over the next 24–48 hours: sleep, mood, clarity, and interactions often shift for the better.

The “How” Behind the Calm

The word “energy” can sound vague, but the results we care about, better sleep, calmer reactions, clearer thinking, are measurable in simple ways. Practices that reliably move people into a relaxed rest-and-digest state tend to produce these benefits. Reiki is one approachable pathway into those states. It works well alongside therapy, doctors’ care, and other wellness practices.

Gentle Self-Practice Ideas You Can Start Today

Reiki is about presence more than technique. These at-home practices helped me when I didn’t have access to a session:

1. Hand-to-heart Breathing: One hand on the heart, one on the belly. Inhale for 4, exhale for 6. Whisper a simple phrase: I am safe to soften.

2. Warm Palms for Jaw/Temples: Gently rest warm palms at your temples for 60–90 seconds; release clenching and invite ease behind the eyes.

3. Grounding Scan: From crown to feet, silently name what feels tight and what feels open, no judgment, just awareness.

4. Gratitude Before Sleep: Name three things your body did for you today. This brings attention toward care, not just correction.

These small practices don’t replace a full Reiki session, but they do create conditions where healing and clarity come more naturally.

If you’re not sure whether you’re ready, my post on the “5 Signs You’re Ready to Start Your Healing Journey” might help you check in with what’s happening for you.

How Reiki Complements Other Healing Practices

Reiki isn’t in competition with therapy, medicine, or coaching; it supports them. Picture your wellness like a table with four legs: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. If one leg wobbles, everything feels less steady. Reiki helps you tend the energetic and spiritual legs so the whole table stands stronger.

If you enjoy growth tools with more structure or accountability, explore how Reiki’s calm foundation pairs with reflection and action on the Spiritual Life Coaching page. Many people find that when the nervous system is soothed, it’s easier to implement the changes they already know they need.

Arelis Calkins Answers Frequently Asked Questions about Reiki

Is Reiki religious?

No. People from all faiths (and none) practice or receive Reiki. If you’re faith-centered, you can absolutely hold your spiritual beliefs alongside Reiki.

Can Reiki replace my doctor or therapist?

No. Reiki is complementary to, not a substitute for, professional care. Always follow the advice of licensed clinicians. Think of it as nurturing support for your whole system while you also work with trusted health professionals.

Is Distance Reiki real?

Plenty of people report similar relaxation and clarity when receiving from home.

What if I cry or feel nothing at all?

Both are normal. Emotional release is common; so is a quiet, restorative nap. Your body knows how to heal when given space.

Do I have to believe in it for it to work?

No belief is required. You only need curiosity and a willingness to rest.

Why This Work Matters

Calming reiki healing tools including blanket, candle, and chakra chart.
Healing is personal. For many of us, it begins when we finally choose to face what hurts with love instead of shame. I didn’t come to Reiki because I wanted something mystical. I came because I was tired of holding things I didn’t know how to set down. The practice taught me how to be quieter with myself, and that small quiet has changed how I love, parent, and live. It’s taught me patience with my own process and a kinder way to notice pain without letting it run the show.
This is not about perfection. It’s about giving yourself a path home. If you’ve ever wondered whether healing can ever reach the places you avoid, Reiki is one way to say yes, and to feel that yes in your body.
