Behind the Scenes of Writing Rising Above Adversity: How to Write a Book When the Story Feels Too Hard to Tell

Behind the Scenes of Writing Rising Above Adversity: How to Write a Book When the Story Feels Too Hard to Tell
If you’ve ever wondered how to write a book, especially one that feels too raw or too heavy to share, I understand exactly where you are. When I first sat down to write Rising Above Adversity, I questioned myself a hundred times. Would anyone care about my story? Would it be too much to put my pain on paper? Could I find the courage to share not just the victories but the moments when I nearly gave up?

The truth is, writing a book isn’t just about putting words on a page; it’s about trusting that your story matters. For me, that trust came slowly, one paragraph at a time.

Connect With Me

The Fear That Almost Stopped Me

The Fear That Almost Stopped Me

When I began, the idea of writing a book felt overwhelming. I was just a woman with a story: one shaped by trauma, healing, forgiveness, and the choice to keep moving forward. I was a mother, a cook, a survivor; the idea of being Arelis Calkins, the author, felt like a dream.

Fear whispered that my voice wasn’t strong enough. But every time I thought of giving up, I remembered why I started: because someone out there might need to know they weren’t alone.
If you’re searching for how to write a book, you might feel that same tug of resistance. My advice? Honor it, but don’t let it win. Some of the greatest books are born from stories their authors were afraid to tell.

The Breakthroughs That Carried Me Forward

What changed for me wasn’t suddenly knowing all the right words; it was giving myself permission to write honestly. Here are a few lessons that made the difference:

Start Small

Instead of aiming for a perfect first draft, I began with journal entries. Each one became a building block.

Be Honest

Readers don’t want perfection; they want truth. Writing from the heart made the story flow more naturally.

Find Support

My husband reminded me daily why this book mattered. Having a cheerleader in your corner can keep you going.

Set Realistic Goals

Some days I wrote a page, some days a paragraph. Consistency, not speed, was the goal.
These breakthroughs taught me that writing a book isn’t about being fearless. It’s about writing through the fear.
The Breakthroughs That Carried Me Forward
The Determination to Finish

The Determination to Finish

The idea of starting my book but never completing it motivated me. I didn’t want my dream to live in a notebook or stay hidden in my head. Finishing Rising Above Adversity wasn’t easy. It meant late nights, tears at the keyboard, and rewriting chapters I thought I couldn’t face. But it also meant breakthroughs, laughter, and the moment I finally held the finished book in my hands.

And the best part? Knowing that what once felt impossible had turned into something that could bring healing and hope to others.

What Writing a Book Taught Me About Life

Writing Rising Above Adversity wasn’t just about putting my story on paper. It was about choosing to believe in myself, even when doubt was loud. It was about realizing that every painful chapter could also carry a lesson worth sharing.

And that’s what I want you to know if you’re learning how to write a book: your story matters. The pages may feel heavy, but they can also carry healing for you and for the person waiting to read them.

From Pages to Purpose

My book isn’t perfect, but it’s honest. It’s proof that even the hardest stories can be told, and that in telling them, we find strength we didn’t know we had. If you’ve ever wondered how to take your own story from silence to the page, I invite you to start today. Write a sentence, then another. Let your story breathe. And if you’d like to see how I turned mine into a book, you can find it here:

If It Scares You, Do It Scared

Learning how to write a book taught me that courage isn’t about having no fear; it’s about showing up anyway. If your story feels too hard to tell, maybe that’s the very reason you need to write it. Somewhere out there, someone needs your words.

Don’t keep them waiting.

With Love and Joy,
Arelis Calkins
