How to Find Happiness in Your Daily Life, Even When It’s Hard

by | Oct 3, 2025 | Life Coaching

How to Find Happiness in Your Daily Life, Even When It’s Hard
If you’ve ever typed “how to find happiness” into a search bar, you’re not alone. Millions of people look for the same answer every year. We live in a world where it feels like everyone else is smiling, succeeding, and finding joy with ease, especially on social media. Meanwhile, you might feel like you’re carrying a weight that no one else can see.

The truth? Happiness is not about having a picture-perfect life. It’s not about an organized pantry, flawless relationships, or a life free of challenges. Real happiness is about learning how to see light in the ordinary, and sometimes even in the messy or painful moments.

That shift doesn’t happen overnight, but it can happen.

Practical Tips to Find Happiness Every Day

What Research Teaches Us About Happiness

Studies in positive psychology show that happiness is less about what happens to us and more about how we respond. Gratitude, optimism, and strong connections with others consistently show up as predictors of joy.

This means that happiness isn’t just for the lucky few. It’s something we can nurture daily, even if our circumstances aren’t ideal. Think of it like building a muscle: the more we practice it, the stronger it becomes.

Practical Tips to Find Happiness Every Day

So how do we bring these ideas into our real, messy lives? Here are daily positive habits that have made a difference for me, woven with lessons I’ve learned on my own journey.

1. Practice Gratitude in the Small Things

Gratitude doesn’t need to be a grand list; it can start with noticing the smallest blessings. Write down three things you’re thankful for each morning. Maybe it’s your child’s laughter, the smell of fresh coffee, or the sunlight through your window. Over time, these small acknowledgments create a bigger shift in how you see the world.

2. Make Room for Connection

Happiness often grows in the presence of others. When life feels heavy, it’s tempting to withdraw, but reaching out to someone you trust can lift the fog. It doesn’t have to be a long conversation. Even a text to say, “I was thinking of you,” can spark joy for both of you. Connection reminds us that we’re not alone, even on the hardest days.

3. Spend Time in Nature

Nature is one of the simplest ways to find joy and reset your spirit. A short walk outside, ten minutes in the sun, or even tending a small garden can help you feel calmer and more grounded. I’ve found some of my clearest thoughts while watering plants or walking barefoot in the grass. Joy doesn’t always come from doing more; it can come from slowing down and noticing what’s around you.

4. Create Mindful Moments

Finding happiness doesn’t require an elaborate self-care routine. Sometimes it’s as simple as pausing to breathe deeply, noticing the taste of your food, or savoring the quiet after a long day. These mindful pauses remind you that joy isn’t always waiting at the end of your to-do list; it’s available right now.

5. Give Yourself Grace

This one is often the hardest. We’re quick to be kind to others, but hard on ourselves. On tough days, remember that happiness doesn’t mean constant smiles. It’s okay to feel sadness, frustration, or exhaustion. Grace allows us to honor those feelings while still choosing to come back to hope.

My Journey Toward Happiness

For me, learning how to find happiness wasn’t about chasing milestones; it was about healing from the inside out. There were times when joy felt impossible, when pain seemed louder than peace. What shifted wasn’t my circumstances, but the decision to see myself and my life through a lens of love.

My husband has been a huge part of that journey. From the very beginning, he was supportive of my dreams, understanding of my feelings, and gentle with my heart. Even now, years later, I often say, “Every day, he gives me more reasons to choose him again as my best friend.” That choice, repeated daily, is part of how I’ve found lasting happiness.

The lesson I carry with me is this: happiness is built in moments. Cooking a simple meal, laughing at a small mistake, or sharing quiet time with a loved one: these are the threads that weave joy into our everyday lives.

Happiness Isn’t About Perfection - Arelis Calkins

Happiness Isn’t About Perfection

We often think happiness will arrive when life is finally in order: when the house is spotless, the finances are stable, the stress is gone. But happiness doesn’t wait for perfection. It meets us right where we are: in the laundry piles, in the carpool lane, in the quiet moments when we pause and breathe.

By shifting how we see our daily lives, we realize that joy is not a destination but a practice. Choosing happiness, even in small ways, teaches us resilience and strengthens us for whatever lies ahead.

From Happiness to Healing

In my book, Rising Above Adversity, I share more about what it looks like to pursue joy, even after walking through seasons of loss and pain. It’s not a manual for perfect living; it’s an honest look at how we can heal, forgive, and move forward with love.

Start Creating a Happier Life Today

If you’re wondering how to find happiness, start small. Notice the simple joys, reach out to someone you love, or take five minutes to breathe and reflect. Happiness isn’t about removing every challenge; it’s about finding the light that helps you walk through them.

The next time life feels heavy, remember: joy is closer than it seems. And with practice, you can make it a steady companion in your daily life.

Reiki

Reiki and spirituality have been essential in helping me forgive, heal, and move forward. Our bodies carry trauma, and Reiki helps release it—so you feel better not just physically but mentally and spiritually too. Letting go of what no longer serves us is a gift, and Reiki helps make that possible.

Design

Home is where our stories unfold. It should be a place that brings peace and joy, a reflection of who you are. I believe that surrounding yourself with beauty and comfort can make all the difference. I’ll be sharing my favorite design ideas and tips to help you feel at home, wherever you are.
